Gabrielle DeParis, Ridgewood, NJ Resident Spends First College Days Volunteering in Providence, R.I.

2014 Sep 5

Gabrielle DeParis, a resident of Ridgewood, NJ and a member of the class of 2018 at Providence College, recently participated in the College's third annual FaithWorks service immersion program from August 23 to August 27.

FaithWorks aims to increase service opportunities among incoming freshmen class members and to increase the number of faith formation programs.

DeParis was among 40 PC freshmen who spent their first college days volunteering at various service sites within the Diocese of Providence, including Emmanuel House, a day shelter for the homeless; the St. Martin de Porres Center, a senior service center; the diocese's Office of Life and Family; Immigration and Refugee Services; Cooking Matters at the Store, a program for budgeting healthy meals and touring grocery stores; and St. Mathias programs for assisting individuals with addiction. Some of the students also toured facilities at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections to learn more about the chaplaincy services that are provided. The freshmen were accompanied by 10 upperclassmen leaders.

Providence College is the only college or university in the United States administered by the Dominican Friars.
