Kristen Gold, Somers, NY Resident Spends Winter Break Volunteering in New Orleans

2014 Jan 24

Kristen Gold, a resident of Somers, NY and a member of Providence College's class of 2016, recently participated in Providence College's annual NOLA (New Orleans, L.A.) Immersion 2014 trip, a faith-based service trip in response to the needs of post-Katrina New Orleans. The trip is a mainstay alternative break experience held for the past six years, which aids the local community while exposing students to the faith, food and culture of the Gulf Coast.

From Jan. 11 to 18, Gold, along with 13 other PC students, interacted with multiple service groups and agencies in the area, including Green Light New Orleans, the Harry Tompson Center, the Jesuit Volunteers in NOLA, and the St. Bernard Project. Also, the students volunteered with the Lower 9th Ward Village in an area very much impacted by Hurricane Katrina and still in need of revitalization. In addition, the students connected with New Orleans resident Leonard Alsfeld of the class of 1974.

The students were accompanied by Rev. James Cuddy O.P. '98, chaplain for PC.
