2014 Aug 8

Rose DeRienzo, a resident of Bridgewater, MA and a member of the class of 2015 at Providence College, recently participated in the 7th Annual Rhode Island Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows Conference (SURF).

The annual conference, which was held at the University of Rhode Island was co-sponsored by Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (RI-INBRE) and the Rhode Island NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (RI NSF EPSCoR).

DeRienzo was among more than 30 Providence College students who attended the annual conference which marks the culmination of the 10-week SURF program. The students worked in laboratories all around the state, under the guidance of faculty mentors. The projects included biomedical research, such as the synthesis of new drugs for Alzheimer's disease and the development of nanoparticles for the treatment of lung cancer. Or, they focused on environmental science, such as investigations into how climate change and human-generated pollutants impact the sea life in Narragansett Bay.

Undergraduate students from PC, University of Rhode Island, Brown University, Bryant University, Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams University, and Salve Regina University had a unique opportunity to present their summer research findings to their peers and to the larger Rhode Island community.
